What is Law of Attraction?

Most supporters of the Law of Attraction have avoided references to the Bible, God and Jesus Christ. I have chosen not to ignore the truth. Remember, Jesus is the truth and the light. He taught the Law of Attraction, it's all there, in the Bible. One only needs to look for it. I read the Bible, many times, but it didn't really make deep sense to me until 2006 when I watched the movie The Secret and discovered that the Law of Attraction is overtly mentioned throughout the Bible and that this was part of the message that Jesus gave us. 

In Mark 11:24; Jesus said "I tell you, you can pray for Anything and if you Believe that you've Received it, it will be yours".... which sounds very similar to the Secret's "creative process" of Ask, Believe, Receive.  

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne is really nothing new! Since the 19th and early 20th centuries, there have been many success books written, which were the basis for this blockbuster book. Now you can own the source material from which The Secret was taken!!


Rhonda Byrne, producer of "The Secret" movie, acquired a copy of The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles in 2004. This New Thought work from 1910 opened her eyes to a new way of living and propelled her on her mission to bring the principles of the Universe to the masses - by creating the film THE SECRET!

The Law of Attraction, (which is never directly called the Law of Attraction in the Bible) is supported numerous times throughout the Bible with statements and promises made by God and Christ. For instance Hebrews 4:12; For the word of God is alive and Powerful, it exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.... and there are literally dozens of other verses in the Bible that support this great Law.
Don't forget that you have great Power built within you, for God said that we are made in His image, made to be Like God. If you are not believing in God to bring you everything in life you could ever want or need then you are not fully utilizing the gift of his Power which he has freely given you.  

The Bible was not only meant to lead us to eternal life through the salvation of Jesus Christ, and while that may be it's primary and ultimate purpose, the Bible is also meant to teach us how to live each day in order to have the best experience possible before we die. God wants you to live a blessed, abundant life while you are here, and he will give to you everything you could ever possibly need or want....if you just believe.
So while "The Secret" is not the Bible, nor should it ever be used solely as a guide to this life or the afterlife, many of the principles and practices discussed in "The Secret" are in fact, very significant Biblical principles that work 100% of the time when used in your daily life.  

The Power of Faith

The Secret teaches about the importance of Faith, or un-wavering Faith which happens to be one of the most talked about and important principles within the Bible. The Bible is full of stories of greatness and miracles, things that might seem impossible in the natural, that all revolved around people or groups of people having great Faith; Abraham and Sarah, David, Moses, Noah, the parting of the Red Sea, nearly all of Jesus' teachings, and dozens more. 

You must believe that you have received. You must know that what you want is yours the moment you ask. You must have complete and all-encompassing faith.

In the moment you ask and believe and know you already have it in the unseen, the entire Universe shifts to bring it into the seen. You must act, speak, and think as if you are receiving it now. Why? The universe is a mirror, and the law of attraction is mirroring back to you your dominant thoughts.

If you doubt the Bible's position on faith, just look at these scriptures:

Luke 17:6 "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea', and it will obey you." (NIV)

Matthew 7:7 "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." (NIV)

Matthew 15:28 - Then Jesus said to her, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." (NIV)

Mark 11:23 "I tell you the truth, if anyone says to this mountain, 'Go throw yourself into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him." (NIV)

Matthew 21:22 "If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." (NIV)

These scriptures are some of the most powerful in the Bible. It says you can have anything you want if you have faith.

What You Focus on You Attract To You Or Become

Again, the Law of Attraction as discussed in "The Secret" states that our thoughts are constantly attracting to us the things we think about, whether they be negative or positive. This is experienced every day in our lives even if we don't believe in the Law of Attraction or "The Secret". Just think about how when things go wrong everything seems to go wrong at once, or when you start out happy how the day just seems to get better and better.

Now the Bible may not say this in so many words but there are a number of verses that speak to us about the importance of what we think. Here is one good example:

"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things." Phil 4:8 (NIV)

There are many more verses relating to the use of our minds. God wants us to focus on the positive!

The Law of Attraction and the Power of Forgiveness 

The law of attraction works and if you are constantly focusing on the negative and what someone has done wrong then you often end up like that person. Instead, by forgiving you set yourself free to serve God more fully.

Have you ever noticed how children of alcoholics who blame their parents for their alcoholism and struggle to forgive them for the hardships they endured often become alcoholics themselves? This is just one example that proves how the law of attraction works when it comes to forgiveness and unforgiveness.

When you forgive however, you start to think more on the positive and so can attract the positive to you. It is also often a fact that people who were abused become abusers, but if that person chooses to forgive whoever abused them they are also set free to live a healthier, happier and more productive life.

Positive Emotions and the Fruit of the Spirit 

When we present the fruit of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, we are using the Law of Attraction positively and attract more good things into our lives.

Think about this - when you love you will often find that you are loved in return; when you are patient people can't stay angry with you for very long; when you are joyful and grateful, you find more things to be joyful and grateful about. Living by the fruit of the Spirit, the positive emotions, attracts good into our lives and this is why God wants us to live by these emotions.

Unfortunately, many people today are not presenting the fruit of the Spirit and need to be taught about this in a way that they understand and "The Secret" is doing this.

For me "The Secret" can also be summed up as "Live the Fruit".

Act in Faith 

The Secret focuses on the Law of Attraction and positive thinking, but it by no means excludes the need for action. What it requires is that your action comes from this faith.

Jesus said  that "out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks". Those things that we focus on will determine the way we act because each action begins as a thought.

Proverbs tells us that "as a man thinks in his heart, so is he". If we are continually focusing on the negative then we will behave negatively. If we continually focus on temptation then we will fall. What would you rather focus on? Anything that is positive, right?

Our faith has to determine our actions. When we believe that God has good things in store for us, we will begin to act like He has good things in store for us. If we believe God wants to prosper us then we will bring this into being by taking the necessary actions required to make it happen.

Ask and It is Given

Ask and It Is Given. Ask and Ye Shall Receive. You certainly won't get what you want if you don't ask for it. But what is the correct way to ask for something using the Law of Attraction?

Though it may seem very obvious, we may want many things but we may never really solicit them. With the Law of Attraction, there is also a correct way to request things and an incorrect way too.


The incorrect way is to say that you would like to have something in the future. If you use the future tense and say that you wish to have an abundant life or you would like to find your perfect soul mate, this is exactly what will happen. You hope to get what you are asking for, which is to have an abundant life or a perfect soul mate, at some time in the future, however in the present, this will never materialize.


Use the Present Tense!

With the Law of Attraction, the trick is to request what you want in the present tense as if you already have it:

- I live a happy and abundant life.

- I have the perfect soul mate for a partner.

- I am prosperous in everything I do.

- I am always in the right place at the right time.

Keep it Positive!

Perhaps this sounds familiar to you, because these are otherwise known as "affirmations". You should solicit what you want in the form of these positive affirmations - in other words, "Ask and It is Given".


This is the second requirement for putting your request out in the correct manner. The affirmation must always be positive.


You should never say:

- I don't want to be sick.


But instead you should say:

- I am very healthy and my body functions perfectly.


"Ask and It is Given" means to put these requests out in the positive and not in negative terms of what it is that you don't want.


Emotion is Essential!

You should repeat these affirmations with as much emotion as possible. These are not just words, but these are your dreams and they represent everything that you want. You must feel as if you already have them and evoke as much emotion as possible.


Write your own affirmations and repeat them often. Sometimes it helps to look in the mirror as you say them out loud. Or you might write them down on note cards that you carry around with you or post in prominent places around your house. Ask and It is Given!


Exercise: How would you feel if you won a large sum of money or a trip? Experience it as if you had actually won: scream, shout, run around the house jumping up and down. Are you shaking like a leaf? The trick is to REALLY experience what it would be like. It may feel silly at first, but if you do this exercise correctly you WILL feel the emotion! If you experience this emotion often you WILL see amazing things (monetary or otherwise) to begin happening in your life.

The Law of Allowing

The Law of Allowing is crucial to using the Law of Attraction successfully, however it is also the most difficult step in the process.


You now know what you want and you have asked for it. So how do you get it?


"The Law of Allowing" means that you are ready to receive that which you asked the Universe (e.g. God) for. You prepare yourself to receive by believing! You must not have even the slightest inkling of doubt that you will not receive what you have asked for.


In fact, this is the step that is most likely to cause the Law of Attraction not to work for many people. You know what you want, you ask for it, but then in the back of your mind, some part of you doubts that you will actually receive it. It helps tremendously if you act as if you have already achieved it, even if you don't quite believe. If you act long enough, your mind will eventually start to believe it as well (refer to the exercise mentioned earlier). You can't help but to attract it to you.


I have had several websites that I've always wanted to create. One was a baby contest and the other was helping people learn how to work-from-home. Although the baby contest was quite profitable, I had to give it up when I became pregnant with my first child. As a first time mother, my thoughts and energy were in being the best mother I could be. The second website never really got off the ground before I decided to quit. My heart wasn't in it. There was too much competition and most of these Business-in-a-Box websites were not reputable.


This time, I know that I will be successful, because I have no doubts whatsoever. This website will succeed because my heart is in it and my goal is to help & inspire as many people as possible. What better avenue than to create a website and offer informational eBooks that will uplift spiritually and mentally? At the moment, I don't know how I will make this website stand out from the many other websites on this topic, but I just know that I will somehow make it happen.


Everything you have in your life is there because you believed in it or thought about it. So how do we get this deep-seeded belief? Even if you don't initially have it, try tricking your brain:


* Act as if it is happening now!

* Use positive Affirmations and use them often and with emotion!

Know What You Really Want

It sounds like it would be easy to know what you really want, but it is amazing how many people have trouble with this step. In fact, when you ask someone what they want, you will be surprised to hear many people answer by telling you what they DON'T want. 

The thing about the Law of Attraction is that you get exactly what you are thinking about and focusing on. So if you spend your day thinking about what you don't want or worrying about bad things happening, you will actually be attracting these very things to you. Once you realize this, you should stop those thoughts immediately every time you have them and instead focus on what you DO want.


Therefore, it is important that you know what you really want.


Perhaps your relationship with your partner is going through a rough period. If this is the case, how much time do you spend thinking about all the things your partner does that irritate you?


Or, if finances are the problem, I bet that you are constantly focusing on your "lack", worrying about how to pay the mounting bills and stressing because you can't afford this or that.


This is exactly what you should NOT be doing. In fact, the word WANT is a bad word to use in the first place. If you are "wanting" for something, it reeks of lack and desperation. You should instead be focusing on "having" whatever it is that you aspire to have.


Here are some exercises that I find useful to help me know what I really want and get the Law of Attraction working for me.


Commit Your Desires to Paper

How much money do you wish to have? ______________Annual Salary and/or _____________Savings in the Bank


At this point, do not concern yourself with how you will get the money. HOW is not important! Just be crystal clear regarding exactly how much money you want to have.


Now do a similar exercise with other areas of your life:
* Health and Well-Being
* Personal Relationships
* Career Aspirations
* Spiritual Objectives

* A Brand new Home

* Well-behaved Kids


With the Law of Attraction, the key is to know what you really want and to be very specific about it. It is not good enough to say that you want a wife or husband. What kind of person are you looking for? Just as you did in the financial exercise above, be very specific about everything from his or her height to the personality traits you wish them to have. Write all of your wishes in a notebook that you can easily refer to.



Another exercise that I find very useful is to daydream about what you desire. Just close your eyes and imagine having whatever it is that you want. Imagine how you feel now that you have it. Imagine touching it, seeing it, hearing it, feeling it and knowing that you have it. The more positive emotions you can muster when doing this, the better.

Treasure Chest/Photo Album

I saw this on The Oprah Winfrey show and thought it to be a great idea to help with achieving what you want: Get a small (or large, depending on how many desires you have) cardboard box or a photo album. Collect some old magazines and spend half a day looking through them for pictures of the objects you wish to have. If you see an idyllic picture of a Caribbean beach and this is where you'd like to spend your next vacation, cut it out and put it in your treasure chest or photo album. If you find a picture of your ideal home, put it in there as well. I'm using a photo album with pictures of every room in my brand new home. Or perhaps you can clip out a picture of that new car you've been dying to have. Just keep cutting and collecting the objects of your desire and refer to it often. The idea is to hold a mental image of your desires. There are no limits to what you can wish for as the universe (i.e. God) and the Law of Attraction knows no boundaries. Remember: "Ask, and It is Given".
